Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6k! and BMPCC4K updates!

We definitely live in exciting times! Blackmagic Design have “done it again”!

After waiting a few years for the highly anticipated follow-up to the very popular Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, Blackmagic Design released the BMPCC4K in 2018!

The same great dynamic range, but now with a larger screen, different power options, more ports, more storage options and a new interface!

Here we are in 2019 and Blackmagic has announced the BMPCC6K! That’s right, Blackmagic has crossed the threshold that other camera manufacturers (at the prosumer/consumer level) have yet to cross.

However there are still some things to note (which, for me, aren’t anything to convince me to NOT get the camera): The 6k resolution is “only” up to 50fps (yes even in NTSC land) at the popular 16:9 resolution.

Should this matter? No. Want to record in 6k at 24 fps? Go for it! There are still crops depending on what resolution you use too. (For example, the 120fps in 1080p – you see less of what you’re filming than if you were filming in lower frame rate)

I am sure there are other shortcomings (they are still using the smaller Canon batteries if you go the battery route, for example) but with the new Canon EF mount, larger sensor, and same robust body as the BMPCC4K, I can’t see how this camera wouldn’t appeal to most filmmakers.

Speaking of the BMPCC4K, they are adding anamorphic mode! If I am being honest, I was a little jealous when I had learned that the GH5 had it as I am a fan of the older vintage lenses and would have loved to test it on the Blackmagic camera. Thanks to an upcoming firmware update, now we will be able to!

Blackmagic has definitely made their mark since releasing their cameras starting around 2013, and shipping issues aside, they have managed to stay relevant and provided a lot to the community. I hope they continue to do this for years to come!
